NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. --- The firefighters at the New Hartford Fire Department geared up on Saturday for a CNY Memorial Stair Climb unlike any other.
The Stairclimb was originally supposed to take place earlier this month but was postponed due to COVID-19. Organizers of the stair climb then made the decision to hold the event virtually.
The departments who registered then had a number of options on how to complete the event. The Memorial Stairclimb is an annual event that honors the first responders who lost their lives during the September 11th attacks.
New Hartford Assistant Chief Richard Alexander said this event means a great deal for all firefighters. Instead of climbing the 110 stories they normally do, their department decided to walk 3.4 miles throughout the village.
"343 new york city firefighters died that day. So we planned our route to about 3.43 miles to honor that," said Firefighter Mike Galligano.
The Utica Fire Department also participated in this year's event. No date has been set for the 2021 stair climb event.
