HERKIMER, N.Y. – Groups gathered at Herkimer College Thursday to hold one of many Great American Smokeout events across the country to educate students on the dangers of smoking.
Members of Dolgeville Reality Check, Herkimer County Prevention Council and the Truth group at HCCC shared the benefits of quitting smoking as well as how to support a friend or relative trying to quit.
As vaping has become more popular, there was a dip in the use of tobacco products, according to youth action specialist, Rachel Johnson.
“Because of the rise in vaping, we are seeing all of tobacco products go back up and rise again. Everything had started to go down, with vaping -- they're now switching over to other nicotine products that are easier and cheaper to get and we are seeing tobacco products themselves back on the rise,” said Johnson.
The American Cancer Society started the Great American Smokeout, and provides tools and resources for groups holding local events nationally.
