UTICA - Long-time Oneida County Family Court Judge John E. Flemma died Saturday at the age of 94.
For 28 years, Flemma practiced law in Utica, and was elected as family court judge from 1980-1994. He also served as a Judicial hearing Officer from 1994-2011.
Relatives said Flemma also loved Utica, and served the community in many capacities, including as president of the Utica City School District’s Board of Education, and the Utica Catholic School System Board of Education.
Flemma was a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. He pursued his post-graduate work at Syracuse University College of Law, where he received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1952.
While attending Holy Cross, Flemma interrupted his studies to enlist in the U.S. Army, and served for a time under George S. Patton.
Flemma is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jean; son, George John “Jay” Flemma; and many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, sister-in-law, and cousin.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Eannace Funeral Home Inc. at 932 South St., corner of Hammond Avenue.
The funeral service and Celebration of Life will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home and at 10:30 at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church, where services will be offered by Rev. Mark Kaminski.
Interment in Calvary Cemetery will follow graveside with full Military Honors conferred by the U.S. Army.
