ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The community gathered Thursday to remember and pay respects to a fallen former firefighter in Oneonta.

Calling hours were held at the Bookhout Funeral Home on Main Street in Oneonta for John Heller.

Heller was killed in a house fire last Saturday morning, saving his nephews and fiancée.

Heller served as a firefighter from 2003 to 2009.

His funeral will be held Friday at the Foothills Performing Arts Center.

A man, 34-year-old Terrence Truitt from Oneonta, has been arrested in connection with the case. He was charged with first-degree arson, and police say additional charges could be filed.
