WAMPSVILLE, N.Y. – Two Madison County deputies were honored this week after saving a man pinned under a tractor in Oneida Creek.
Deputy D. Ladd and Deputy R. Marriott both received divisional commendations for their heroic actions.
On July 6, the deputies were called to Oxbow Road in the town of Smithfield, where they found a man in the Oneida Creek yelling for help. The victim was stuck underneath a lawn tractor and struggling to keep his head above water.
The deputies, and other first responders, were able to lift the tractor enough to get the man out. The victim suffered minor injuries, and was treated at the scene by emergency workers.
According to the sheriff’s office, the man was mowing the lawn when he slid down an embankment, and was stuck in the creek for at least 30 minutes before help arrived.
Smithfield Fire Department, SEVAC Ambulance, and the New York State Police all assisted at the scene.
