UPDATE 1:48 am: Utica Police tell us the man who climbed the tower in North Utica has been brought down safely and was sent to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.
The man climbed the tower around 2 pm Tuesday. Utica Police, Utica Fire, and a team from the Syracuse Fire Department worked together to get the man down from the tower. Crews worked for hours and were still at the tower at 11 pm Tuesday night.
Early Wednesday morning, police told us the man was down from the tower safely and has been taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.
They tell us the first time he climbed the tower he was charged with a crime, but it was in connection to a previous incident.
They are not releasing the man's name.
UTICA – A man has climbed to the top of the Utica sign along the canal trail in North Utica for the second time this month.
Utica police crisis negotiators are talking to the man, who has been at the top of the sign for more than 2 hours.
Police say the tower is surrounded by fencing, topped off with barbed wire. Officers have the trail blocked off at this time. The Utica fire and police departments are on the scene, and Syracuse Fire Department are heading to location to offer assistance.
