UTICA, N.Y. - Hugh McGing scored his first career AHL goal and goalie Jake Kielly was solid making 32 saves as the Utica Comets topped the Rochester Americans 3-2 in a shootout at the Adirondack Bank Center, Wednesday.
McGing got the scoring going off a feed from Josh Teves just 2:36 into the first period.
Jonah Gadjovich added his team-leading eighth goal of the year off a feed from Mitch Eliot with just 1:33 remaining in the opening frame to increase the Comets lead to 2-0. Lukas Jasek also assisted on the play.
Jack Quinn brought the Amerks within one on a power play goal late in the second, and Michael Mersch scored just 1:53 into the third in order to tie the game.
The Comets killed off a big 4-on-3 power play in the eventual overtime period and with neither team scoring, the game went the distance to the shootout.
McGing and John Stevens scored for the Comets, while Kielly stopped three of the four Rochester attempts in the skills competition to seal the victory.
The Comets improve to 6-2-0-1, and return to action on Friday night to host the Syracuse Crunch.
