WESTERNVILLE, N.Y. – The National Weather Service in Binghamton has confirmed an EF1 tornado did touch down near Westernville Thursday night.
Maximum winds were up to 105 mph, knocking trees and wires down across the area.
The EF, or Enhanced Fujita, scale rates tornadoes from 0 to 5 based on wind speed. An EF1 has gust speeds from 86 - 110 mph.
Crews were working on cleanup Friday, and several roads were still closed, including Main Street and Stokes-Westernville Road.
Route 46 has opened to one lane of traffic.
Nearly 500 National Grid customers are still without power, and it isn't expected to be restored until 2 p.m. Saturday.
