SYRACUSE, N.Y. - This year's sandcastle theme at the New York State Fair is The Wizard of Oz.
It's an annual fair tradition, just like the butter sculpture.
The sand sculpture is located in the Center of Progress building.
This year's sand sculpture idea came from the public.
All of the main characters from The Wizard of Oz are featured.
Raymond Wirick, a professional sandcastle builder, says building a structure like this requires a lot of talent, but there's also some science behind building a successful masterpiece.
"Every sand is different. Some sand is more washed and older, and if you look at it under a microscope it looks like a marble, try and stack marbles, it's not very easy," Wirick said. "Other sand, good sand, young sand is actually faceted like a diamond. That stacks well, so depending on the beach, depending on the sand, you design around what the sand allows you to do. You go too far one way, it'll all come down."
The artist says its just as much about the performance as it is the actual finished product.
