BALD MOUNTAIN, N.Y. --- The NYSDEC is investigating offensive graffiti that was painted on rocks at the top of Bald Mountain. Viewers sent us photos of the drawings. One appears to say "COVID-19 2020." Hikers said the drawings were located off of the main trail past the fire tower. None of the hikers NEWSChannel 2 spoke with saw the drawings themselves but were upset by the pictures.
"I don't think anything like that should be happening because the years that I have come up here I have never seen anything like that. Especially during this difficult time, this should not be happening. It ruins it for a lot of people," said Karen Myorga.
Many of the hikers that were on the mountain were families with children.
DEC Forest Rangers were at the mountain beginning their investigation. The DEC said that if caught, those responsible could face a $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail.
DEC officers ask if you have any information about who may have done this, to call them at their non-emergency dispatch at 518-897-1300
