LATHAM, N.Y. - The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) has canceled spring sports championship events for the second year in a row, the Association announced, Wednesday.
The decision was made after consulting with executive directors and member schools from the state's 11 sections, in which many concerns were raised regarding logistics and safety.
The NYSPHSAA had previously canceled fall and winter championship events this academic year, meaning that with no spring championships, there will be no New York State champions in any high school sport in 2020-21.
Last academic year, the entire spring season was canceled amid the pandemic. There is no indication that the same will happen this year with the NYSPHSAA previously committing to giving student-athletes at least some type of athletic experience to look forward to within the parameters of the pandemic.
Individual sections will have the right to determine what the regular season and potential postseason play will look like for its member schools, so it is possible section champions could still be crowned.
The spring season is set to begin on April 19 statewide.
