Ahead of National Move Over Day on Saturday, AAA and other local community partners are urging people to follow the rules of the road to protect roadside workers and emergency responders.

The Slow Down, Move Over law requires drivers to slow down and move into the other lane when passing an emergency vehicle, tow truck, or road maintenance vehicle parked on the roadside with flashing lights on.

A poll by AAA found that 23% of people don’t know about the move over laws in their state.

"Roadside deaths can be avoided if drivers slow down and move over to give workers a safety zone,” said John Corlett, chairman of the Legislative Committee for AAA New York State. "AAA and our community partners are urging drivers to pay attention and follow the move over law when AAA, an emergency responder, or anyone is on the side of the road."

Across the country, 49 people have been killed on the roadside so far this year. Last year, 46 were killed.

In New York, 33 people were killed outside of a disabled vehicle on the roadside from 2015 - 2019.

According to the state DMV, 685 people received tickets for move over law violations during the STOP-DWI campaign from Aug. 20 - Sept. 6.
