ORISKANY, N.Y. -- It is National Public Safety Telecommunications Week – a time to say thank you to 911 dispatchers.
Call takers at the 911 center are hearing from people at their worst.
Fires, shootings, heart attacks, car crashes, sometimes calls are frantic, sometimes calls are coming in several at a time, and dispatchers stay calm and act quickly under pressure.
"They really are the first, first responders because in many cases they are actually giving instructions over the phone. Especially medical instructions prior to fire and EMS personnel arrival. It's a thankless job and they deserve to be recognized for it,” said Fred Lampman,
National Public Safety Telecommunications Week is celebrated each year during the second week of April.
