CHADWICKS, N.Y. – The New Hartford Police Department is putting a substation at the old train depot in Chadwicks.
The town already owns the depot, which is currently vacant.
Town Councilman Jim Mesa spearheaded the effort to expand police presence in the area after the police department moved to the town offices in the Orchard complex.
"With the new location, it would take a police car out of the zone if they had to go to the police station up in the new municipal building. So, having a substation here, would be very efficient and cost effective as well because you're not utilizing a lot gas back and forth and again it gives a nice police presence in this area,” said Mesa.
The town board unanimously approved establishing a substation at the depot, which used to house the Oneida County Drug Task Force.
The substation is expected to open in about a month.
