UTICA, N.Y. - In less than 24 hours, Killabrew Saloon in New Hartford transformed part of their parking lot into an outdoor restaurant.

"We literally just took our tables that were inside, brought them out, set up some tents," Michael Volz, owner of Killabrew said. "Over the next few days, we're going to set up some lattice and some other things to kind of make it a little cozier for people."

Volz says it was easy to set up because he's had time to think about it and plan.

"For the last few weeks, I've been anticipating a scenario like this happening so I've been planning for that," Volz said.

Volz is glad to have his customers back after almost three months of being closed to indoor dining.

“I’m super excited, any step in the right direction is huge for us," Volz said. "Not just for us as a restaurant, but customers as well."

Customers seemed to be even happier.

"It's so nice to back and have some sort of normalcy with some friends of mine, eating at our favorite establishment and having a couple of drinks and just enjoying the Killabrew again," Kristin St. Hilaire, Killabrew customer said.

Add in the beautiful weather and you've got a great combination.

"It's beautiful out here, it's a beautiful day and we're out here having our dinner and enjoying some laughs which we haven't been able to do that in such a long time so it's nice to be able to get a little bit of that back in our lives," St. Hilaire said.

All guidelines are being followed and everything is sanitized after each use, including the restrooms.

"We're allowing one customer in at a time with a mask on and we sanitize the bathroom as soon as they leave," Volz said. "As soon as they get up from the table, any surfaces like chairs, tables, any condiment containers will be sanitized between each service."

Volz addressed concerns about weather.

"We are at the mercy of mother nature unfortunately," Volz said. "I don't have a tent or covering at this time, so if the weather permits, we're going to do it, if it doesn't, we'll have to halt the outdoor operation."

While it might still be different than the atmosphere everyone is used to, Volz will be doing everything he can to make this as seamless of a transition as possible, while still abiding to the guidelines.
