NEW YORK MILLS, N.Y. – New York Mills police are warning the public of a scam starting on Facebook Marketplace.

Police say a Facebook user under the name “Mills Fraleigh Travis” arranged to meet a seller in New York Mills to buy an iPhone XR on Feb. 23.

When the suspect met the seller, he asked if he could hold the phone to test his SIM card. He then handed the seller an envelope telling him to hold onto it while he tested the phone.

The suspect then fled the scene before the seller realized the envelope was full of pieces of paper the size of dollar bills.

Police say this scam has happened to several people over the past few weeks.

Anyone with information about the suspect should contact the New York Mills Police Department at 315-736-6623.
