DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. - The Board of Education held a special meeting to present a new budget to voters. The new budget amount is $18,938,622 and proposes a 5.9% tax levy increase.

With the new budget amount comes more cuts, according to district superintendent Lynn Rhone.

Rhone says the district has to cut approximately $450,000 more, which means further staff reductions.

”We looked at the cuts we can make again and we really would like the public to give us that 5.9% because, as you know, we had a deficit," Rhone said.

That deficit is $2.6 million.

Cuts in the previous budget proposal included five-and-a-half teaching positions, eight teacher's aides, two counselors, two bus monitors, a business office position and several coaches, as well as eliminating lots of supplies for teachers and maintenance. Rhone said those cuts will still happen along with additional cuts. Rhone said she could not give specifics because the teachers have not been notified yet.

“We feel terrible about the cuts we’ve had to make but we think we’ve made cuts that minimally impact the kids," Rhone said. "Everything impacts the kids, it really does, but we’re trying to make sure we keep our programming in place."

If the budget doesn't pass, Rhone said those cuts will still be made.

"If that 5.9% budget does not pass, when we go to contingent budget, the cuts that we decided on tonight will happen whether the budget goes down or not," Rhone said.

A public hearing is scheduled for the proposed budget on June 11 and the budget vote will be June 18.
