Rome, N.Y. - Human trafficking is a major problem around the world, including here in the United States, and right here in the Mohawk Valley.

That's why one brand new local organization is looking to build something here in our area to help those who become victims.

The group called Rahab Refugee Ministries Inc., or RRMI, was just approved as a not for profit in April and held its first fundraising event on Saturday. That event, the first ever RRMI Run and Walk at Haselton Wright Park in Rome.

The goal of RRMI is to open the first long-term residential recovery program in the area to minister to victims of exploitation and sex trafficking.

RRMI President and CEO Christine Carpenter says the goal is to open "House of Hope' sometime in 2022, "I'm not sure whether we will actually be building a building. We're all waiting to see how other local organizations come alongside of us. So we will either be building a building or buying a building and refurbishing it."

Carpenter says the new RRMI House of Hope will provide comprehensive residential services based on the organization's mission, vision, core values, and a holistic recovery process, "RRMI will meet the needs of adult women, and their children, who have been sexually exploited. The "House of Hope" will be a safe environment where each woman will be equipped with the skills necessary to re-enter society by being nurtured emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually with love and compassion. Our 12-18 month program will utilize strength-based and trauma-informed approaches in all our services including licensed therapeutic services."

Carpenter says the House of Hope will be built somewhere in the Oneida County/Madison County area.
