The Herkimer County Office for the Aging is offering two new programs to make it easier for the elderly to get around to the places they need to go to, and also to help prevent them from falling.
One of the new programs being offered by the agency is providing transportation for older residents in Poland, Ohio, Newport and Middleville two times per month so that they can go shopping and run errands. On the first and third Tuesday each month, a van will pick up people at their homes and take them to Herkimer.
This program will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 6. If you’re interested in making a reservation for the van, you can call 315-867-1121.
The second program is a falls prevention program that aims to reduce the number of falls among older adults in Herkimer County. The Officer for the Aging will work with healthcare providers, home health care agencies and pharmacists to raise awareness about how falls can be prevented.
The two new programs are being funded through two grants, totaling more than $85,000, from The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties.
