UTICA, NY - The new roundabout at the intersection of Route 5s/Oriskany Street and John Street in the City of Utica is now open to vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
The roundabout is 170 feet in diameter and includes a raised center island. That island will be the site of a proposed "essential workers" sculpture, along with some landscaping.
The New York State Department of Transportation, which oversaw the project, says the roundabout was necessary to improve traffic safety at this busy intersection.
"What we tried to do is slow traffic down - come through here safely. Also… there's a lot of pedestrian access through here that I think people are going to really enjoy," said Jim Piccola, NYS DOT Region 12 spokesperson.
The DOT will continue working on the Route 5s project throughout the winter, but trees and landscaping won't be finished until the spring.
