NEWPORT N.Y.- The Newport Fire Department held a memorial service for fallen firefighters Friday evening.
The ceremony usually happens during the Newport Fireman's field days every year, however the field days were cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Around 15 names of fallen firefighters were read at Friday's memorial service.
Among those who attended was Assemblyman Robert Smullen from New York's 118th district. Smullen says it's important for firefighters to help their neighbors.
"It's fantastic to be here on a beautiful evening here in Newport." said Smullen. "This is civics in America when a community comes together and honors those who have gone before, especially in the fire service those who help out their neighbors, when the call comes those who go to help out their neighbors it's fantastic." Smullen added.
In leiu of the cancelled Fireman's field days, the Newport Fire Department held a Fish Fry Friday, and will be holding a chicken BBQ on Saturday August 1st.
The chicken BBQ starts at 12:00 p.m, and runs until sold out.
The cost of the chicken BBQ is $10.
