UTICA, N.Y. – Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri recognized a local firefighter and the responding crew for saving a life at BJ's Wholesale Club last week.
Utica firefighter Adrian Irizarry was at BJ’s on Sunday, May 24, when a customer collapsed and went into cardiac arrest inside the store. Irizarry, who was off duty, performed CPR and used the store’s automated external defibrillator on the customer while waiting for emergency responders.
Palmieri says due to Irizarry’s quick actions, and the measures taken by the responding crew, the customer was taken to the hospital with a pulse.
The responding crew included Lt. Richard Stemmer and firefighters Richard Nower, Don Worden, Michael Dam and Ehser Kanyaw.
