Whitesboro police officer dies in crash on Oriskany Boulevard

State Police say a Whitesboro Police officer has died as a result of a crash involving his police cruiser and a pickup truck Wednesday evening.

UPDATE (11:38 p.m.):

WHITESBORO - New York State Police tell NEWSChannel 2 that a Whitesboro Police officer has died as a result of a crash involving his police cruiser and a pickup truck Wednesday evening.

Troopers say the officer was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet released his name.

The driver of the pickup truck, which was an orange Chevy Avalanche, was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The State Department of Transportation says Oriskany Boulevard is closed in both directions between Westmoreland Street and Tracey Street while police and emergency crews work at the crash scene.

The accident took place just before 8:00 p.m. near Tony's Pizzeria. Several police and fire departments were called to the scene to assist. Witnesses say a medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene, but no one was put on board.

State Police say they will hold a news conference Thursday morning to provide additional information on the crash. No word on the possibility of traffic tickets or other charges at this time.

The Oneida County District Attorney confirms to NEWSChannel 2 that a Whitesboro Police officer was involved in the accident, but authorities have not yet released the officer's name. Officials have also not released any information on the condition of the officer.

WHITESBORO, N.Y. – A section of Oriskany Boulevard in Whitesboro is closed off to traffic due to an officer involved accident.

The State Department of Transportation said Oriskany Boulevard is closed in both directions between Westmoreland Street and Tracey Street.

DOT is helping with road closures.
