UTICA, N.Y. – On Earth Day, Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority is asking people to recommit to recycling, but avoid “wish-cycling” items that aren’t actually recyclable.
Non-recyclable items that are commonly thrown in the recycle bin include plastic bags, Styrofoam, bulky plastics and scrap metal.
These materials can contaminate recyclable items and cause issues with the equipment used at recycling centers.
The program used at the Authority allows all plastic bottles, cups and containers to be recycle, regardless of the number in the triangle on the item. The bottles should be emptied and rinsed, and bottle caps do not need to removed. The only excluded items are Styrofoam, prescription medicine bottles and motor oil bottles.
