MARCY- Over the weekend, the Oneida County Health Department ordered Mohawk Valley Wellness to temporarily close due to positive COVID cases.
The crossfit gym, located in Marcy sent out an email to members over the weekend telling them about the closure. Embedded in the email was a YouTube video from the owner, John Bartholomeo, explaining why the gym would close until December 5.
In the video Bartholomeo says it had to do with the mask mandate. "Roughly three months ago when we were allowed to reopen, it was made clear to us that in order for us to reopen we had to make our members wear masks, " said Bartholomeo. "I made the decision to say that's not my place to make anyone do anything they don't want to including wearing a mask."
NEWSChannel 2 reached out to Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente's who confirmed the gym was closed, and we asked why they ordered them to close. Picente's Office says they were ordered to temporarily close because of the positive covid cases. Officials say when they issued the temporary closure, the gym had three cases.
We have reached out to the gym for comment.
