ORISKANY, N.Y. – Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol says a Utica man was charged with second-degree escape after jumping out of a van while being transported back to jail from Rome City Court.
Earl Wilkes, 27, of Utica, an inmate at the jail, was taken to court by corrections officers for an appearance on Monday, Jan. 13.
Maciol says while driving back to the jail after court, Wilkes popped a window open and was able to open the back door, jumping out onto Rome-Westmoreland Road in Rome.
The officers were able to restrain Wilkes before he was able to run.
Wilkes was evaluated and transported to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
He was arraigned in Rome City Court on Friday and, in accordance with new bail reform, bail was set at $1.
Wilkes will appear in Rome City Court at a later date.
