ORISKANY, NY-- The Oneida County Sheriff's Office unveiled a new tool that aims to keep the community safe and informed.
It's a new mobile app that can be downloaded for free on Android or Apple devices. Law enforcement officials made the announcement during a press conference at the Law Enforcement Building in Oriskany, on Thursday.
"The app itself is just another resource that we make available to the public, " said Robert Swenszkowski, undersheriff for Oneida County. "It increases our transparency and the ability for us to disseminate information to the people that we're serving."
The app was created in partnership with TheSheriffApp.com, which builds custom mobile apps for law enforcement agencies throughout the United States.
The app features news alerts, information on the sheriff's office, the Top 10 Most Wanted List, sex offenders, pistol permits, fingerprint information, even a section where people can anonymously submit tips or photos.
Authorities said it's easy to use and the more people that use the app the more people will be informed.
"It's just something where if you sign up for our push notifications, you get those message on your phone when something happens, if there's a flood watch, if there's an evacuation, if there's a serious motor vehicle accident, a road closure something like that," Swenszkowski said. "It's just another feature that enhances our ability to promote public safety."
Officials are also working on adding a video chat feature for families of inmates soon.
