ORISKANY, N.Y. – The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office seized $3,000 worth of illegal fireworks during a traffic stop on Westmoreland Road in Whitestown on Wednesday.
Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol says the two minors in the vehicle were both charged with illegal possession of fireworks, after deputies found several boxes of illegal fireworks throughout the backseat and trunk of the SUV.
Because the suspects are under 18, their names will not be released. Both were issued summonses, and are scheduled to report to court at a later date.
Maciol says the sheriff’s office has received several complaints about illegal fireworks going off throughout the county, at all hours of the night.
“Not only in communities throughout Oneida County, but also the entire state of New York, people have been overrun with a significant amount of fireworks complaints – it’s just been basically, out of control,” said Maciol. “There have been instances where communities have been woken all hours of the night, with these illegal fireworks going off. And I assured everyone from the get-go…that we would do all we can to remove these illegal fireworks from our community.”
There are certain sparkling devices that are legal to buy and use in New York, and Maciol says those are the types that are usually lit from the top, like sparklers and poppers. Illegal fireworks include bottle rockets, aerial devices and firecrackers.
“Those that would like to enjoy legal sparkling devices, certainly they can do so safely,” said Maciol. “But those that possess illegal fireworks…that’s not going to be tolerated here in our community. The sheriff’s office is committed to doing all we can to remove these illegal devices from our community.”
