SYLVAN BEACH, N.Y. --- The Oneida County Sheriff's Office reported a busy weekend out on the water this Memorial Day weekend. The Sheriff's Office had its Marine Patrol Unit out on both Oneida and Delta Lake this weekend.
The unit allowed crews from NEWSChannel 2 to tag along for a ride-along for the day to observe how they operate. Seargent Scott Kahl said that safety is their biggest priority this weekend.
"With the weather that we've had this spring and the pandemic that we've had, this weekend is probably going to be the first weekend a lot of people have been out in their boats. So it's kind of a test run right now. We just urge people to look over their boats really well before they go out," said Kahl.
Sergeant Kahl said this weekend he will be making sure that people have enough life jackets on board, and kids 12 and under are wearing them.
"Any kid that's under 12 years old while they are out and about in the boat or in the cabin unless they're down inside the cabin they have to have their lifejackets on at all times," said Kahl.
