ORISKANY, N.Y. – Some members of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office will soon begin using a new remote restraint device called BolaWrap, that allows deputies to detain suspects without the use of pain compliance tools like stun guns or pepper spray.
Wrap technologies, the company that makes BolaWrap, joined the sheriff’s office Tuesday for a demonstration of the new tool.
“This is a product…which basically restricts someone's movements significantly for enough time for officers to move in and safely take someone into custody without, again, you're not talking any pepper spray, you're not talking Tasing, there's no pain inflicted basically, you're just restricting someone's movement,” said Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol.
The sheriff’s office will get six BolaWraps at first, three for patrol units and three for use at the Oneida County jail.
Each BolaWrap unit is $925, and $30 for each cartridge.
