Beginning in October, 16-year-olds will be treated as juveniles in the criminal justice system. In 2019, 17-year-olds will join them.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed “Raise the Age” into law in 2017 so that 16- and 17-year-olds in New York State would not be automatically tried as adults.

On Wednesday, Oneida County officials – including the county executive, a family court judge and probation – got together at BOCES in New Hartford in an effort to make sure that everyone is on the same page as they prepare to implement “Raise the Age.”

One local concern is adding those age groups to an already over-burdened family court system.

"Obviously there's going to be an upswing in cases,” said Oneida County Family Court Judge Randal Caldwell. “At this point in time, we're not really quite sure what that's going to look like. We've looked at some projections, but we've been assured that whatever resources that are needed will be provided.”

All of those in attendance on Wednesday had an interactive discussion on the implementation of Raise the Age in Oneida County.
