WORCESTER, N.Y. – New York State Police issued 17 tickets in Worcester Tuesday, as part of Operation Hard Hat.
State police, the Department of Transportation and the New York State Thruway Authority work together on the initiative, which aims to promote safe driving through work zones.
Troopers, dressed as highway construction workers, were stationed at Exit 19 on Route 88.
“None of the work zones are staged. They're actual work zones where the DOT are working, and we're just out there to watch over their shoulder,” said trooper Agnieszka Dembinska. “We know how dangerous it is to be on the side of the road and we want to be able to partner up with them stay safe and go home to their families.”
During the operation Wednesday, they issued 12 speeding tickets, one ticket for no seatbelt and four other violations.
Last year, more than 1,000 tickets were issued in the state of New York through Operation Hard Hat.
