Otsego County Sheriff's race

The race for Otsego County Sheriff has become a dispute about an alleged incident that happened at the correctional facility.

Bob Fernandez is running against incumbent Richard Devlin for Otsego County Sheriff. Fernandez’s platform focuses mainly around what he believes is a cover-up at the Correctional Facility involving the Sheriff’s son.

"There was a workplace violence investigation that went on that the County did, and I think that was concluded back in last January."

The alleged incident wasn’t reported until five days later. When it did come to the Sheriff’s attention, he took immediate action.

"As soon as we learned about that we started an investigation internally. That same day we received a call from our Personal Director advising that the County Board Chair advised us not to investigate, that the County would be taking over the matter, so we did that and the County took over the matter. An outside agency was brought in which was the New York State Police. They investigated the matter."

The New York State Police investigation showed no evidence that would lead to an arrest, and that there are corroborating reports from witnesses saying the incident didn’t happen, but the County report reads differently.

Robert A. Fernandez: "There’s a County report out there that says he tried to interfere with the investigation. He told his guys they don’t have to participate in the investigation. As a police officer that right there shows lack of integrity, a lack of honesty, and if it’s not incompetence, it’s corruption."

Sheriff Devlin tells us the County report was generated with political motivation at play. "Mr. Fernandez’s wife Kathy Clark was the Board Chair when this incident happened. She’s the one who took over the investigation. She’s the one that’s spearheaded this investigation for the first year, and my opinion is, and I think it’s a lot of people’s opinions, that this is a political witch hunt."

While many political races boil down to who’s the Democrat and who’s the Republican, this race really boils down to which candidate is the best man for the job.
