ONEONTA, N.Y. – Otsego County reported 41 new cases of coronavirus Wednesday, due to spikes within the local college communities.
According to Otsego County Department of Health, there have been 12 new cases at SUNY Oneonta and 31 new cases at Hartwick over the past three days. The county has reported less than 20 new daily cases for the past two weeks.
Hartwick College confirmed 23 cases among students on Wednesday alone.
In a post to the Hartwick College website, President Margaret Drugovich said the cases seem to be related to unsafe social behavior. As a precaution, the school switched to remote for the remainder of the day Wednesday, and closed some campus locations like the fitness centers, library and lounge.
Drugovich said the college expects to return to normal operations on Thursday, and students should go to their testing appointments as scheduled.
As of Wednesday, there were 100 active coronavirus cases in Otsego County, with six people hospitalized.
