UTICA – The owner of the former Hollyrock building on Varick Street appeared in Utica City Court Monday morning.
Steven Mancuso tore down the old Hollyrock building – located at 632 Varick Street – last week, prompting the City of Utica to seek maximum penalties. He's charged with violating an international property code regarding the presence of rubbish and garbage, and city code violations for failing to get a permit and failure to get a certificate of appropriateness.
Mancuso pleaded not guilty to all charges. His lawyer says Mancuso did as instructed by the City of Utica, presenting a letter dated March 7 informing him that the building needed to be torn down as soon as possible.
The city sent him another letter on March 14, saying he needed to get permission by the Preservation Commission before he could demolish it. Mancuso says he didn’t get that letter until March 28.
Debris from the building is being removed by the city’s codes department.
Mancuso is scheduled to return to count on May 14 for a pre-trial conference.
