ROME, N.Y. – Rome police are reminding residents that personal protective equipment needs to be properly disposed of to avoid inadvertently spreading coronavirus.
Disposable masks, gloves, gowns and any other potentially contaminated PPE should be thrown in the garbage.
RPD Detective Sharon Rood says gloves or masks left outside on streets or sidewalks could result in a violation of Rome City Code for littering, and lead to a fine of up to $500.
“When you're done using them or get home, throw them in the trash. Most stores, supermarkets, gas stations have trash cans available. There's no particular one that's better than the other, just don't leave them in the street...throw them away either on site or when you get home," said Rood.
PPE should never be put in the recycling to avoid spreading illness to the people who handle those items.
