ROME, N.Y. – The man who tried to save 67-year-old Robert Barnes after he fell through ice while ice fishing on the Erie Canal Monday says he heard Barnes yelling while he was walking by.
Michael Aldrich says he told his girlfriend to call 911 before running over to try and help Barnes.
“I broke as much ice -- after running that far my legs were tired -- I broke as much ice as I could with my legs and hands. He was just out of reach,” said Aldrich.
Aldrich thinks Barnes was sitting on a life jacket.
“I told him hold on to the life jacket, help is on the way,” said Aldrich.
Barnes was taken to Rome Memorial Hospital after fire crews were able to get him out of the water. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
