ROME, N.Y. – Some community members in Rome have signed a petition opposing the proposed demolition of a historic former school building on Erie Boulevard.
Hoffman Development Corp. of Albany has submitted a proposal to the Rome Planning Board to tear down the former West Rome School at 1315 Erie Boulevard to build a new car wash.
The change.org petition was started by Bill Rapke, and has more than 250 signatures as of Tuesday afternoon.
According to the petition, the school, which was built in 1936, was designed by a Rome native and is one of the few remaining limestone buildings in the area. The petitioners want the planning board to reject the project proposal, and consider other locations for the car wash.

The Rome Planning Board meets again on Feb. 2.
