DEERFIELD – A Poland man was seriously injured in a one-car crash in Deerfield on Tuesday after his vehicle struck a tree, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident on Walker Road in Deerfield was first reported at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Oneida County 911 Center.
Deputies say 53-year-old Terry Mayer of Poland was driving a 2005 pickup truck northbound on Walker Road, and witnesses say he was driving erratically, striking mailboxes on the shoulder of the northbound lane.
Mayer continued to drive after the mailbox incident and his vehicle then crossed into the southbound lane, left the roadway and then struck a tree in someone’s yard, according to deputies.
Mayer was treated at the scene by members of the Deerfield Fire Department and Kunkel Ambulance, and he was then transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center with head and chest injuries.
Deputies say Mayer is charged with the misdemeanors of DWAI – drugs and operating with a revoked license. He’s also been issued tickets for the traffic infractions of having no insurance, an unregistered vehicle, switched plates, being unlicensed, failing to keep right, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle. He’s scheduled to answer the charges in Deerfield court at a later date.
