ROME, N.Y. – Rome Police Department is continuing to investigate several reports of missing catalytic converters in and around the city.
Lt. Sharon Rood says suspects are stealing the parts during the night, and likely selling them as scrap.
Rood says the thieves seem to be targeting residences and businesses where several vehicles are parked, because there have been missing converters reported from vehicles parked at the same location.
While police have made arrests related to these incidents, Rood says the suspects are released on appearance tickets due to the bail reform laws.
Charges for these thefts could include auto stripping, grand larceny and criminal mischief.
Rood encourages residents to call 911 if they see any suspicious activity.
