GREECE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a young girl who drowned in the Erie Canal near Rochester fell into the waterway while retrieving her sandals from a dock during a family outing.
The Democrat and Chronicle reports that Town of Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan says Friday that it appears Alliyah Williams of Rochester slipped on a dock and fell into the water Thursday evening.
Police were called to the scene and a search was launched. The girl's body was found by police divers nearly three hours later in about 8 to 10 feet of water near where she fell in.
Initial reports had the girl's age as 5.
Police say Alliyah had been at a canalside park with her sister and two other family members, and the group had done some canoeing on the canal.
