NEWPORT, N.Y. – New York State Police are continuing their search for an elderly man who they believe fell into the West Canada Creek Friday night.
Police say 90-year-old William Coman was throwing something into the water not far from his home in Newport. Investigators found a shoe floating in the water, and were able to confirm it was Coman’s, leading them to believe he fell in and didn’t come back out.
Rescue crews have been searching for Coman since Friday, in what police are now calling a recovery effort.
A helicopter has been called to the scene to search from above, and the New York Power Authority has shut down water flow from the Hinckley dam, lowering the water level by three feet.
Community members have also come out to the creek to help with the search.
