As November approaches, Central New York is going to start to see the increasing chance for snowfall so it's time for homeowners to try to take advantage of the nicer weather and try to winterize their homes. There are many things that homeowners can do to prepare for winter and since there are still leaves on the trees you want to start with the gutters
"Check your leaves in your gutters. Make sure your gutters are free and clear of the leaves. We are running a little late this year but it looks like the snow is coming before they're down so unfortunately you're going to have to get up there or hire somebody who is qualified to clean your gutters," said Mark Major of Major Construction.
Other things homeowners can do outside is take in the hoses and cover the water spicket to prevent pipes from bursting over the winter and into spring. They can cover the top of the air conditioner, set the ceiling fan for winter, add insulation to the attic, and install weather stripping on exterior doors to help prevent any drafts.
"A lot of people can't afford a new window. The vinyl replacements are more or less inexpensive to go with but if they can't afford it use the plastic that you use with a blow dryer. That really does work very well."
Another good tip is to stake off your driveway while the ground is not frozen yet if you plan to hire someone to plow your driveway.
