UTICA N.Y.- The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority has some tips to dispose of fireworks properly.
The Authority says discarded fireworks can be a danger to sanitation workers, trucks, and solid waste facilities if improperly disposed of.
The following steps should be taken to dispose of unused, mis-fired, or "Dud" fireworks.
- Completely submerge fireworks in a large bucket of water and soak until thoroughly saturated. This may take 15 minutes for small fireworks, or as long as overnight for large fireworks.
- Wrap the completely soaked fireworks in plastic wrap or two plastic bags so they do not dry out.
- Place the double-bagged fireworks in with household garbage.
"Even if the firework is spent, or it's misfiring, it's not lighting, there still is a potential for it to spark a fire in garbage truck or at a waste facility, so it is really important to soak the firework, all parts of it just to prevent any fires or explosions from happening during transport of the material." said Samantha Brown the Recycling Coordinator for the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority.
Brown also says that fireworks casings made out of cardboard or paper are also not recyclable becuase of the residue.
The residue could be explosive and lead to a potential fire, so any portion of used or unused fireworks should not be recycled.
