SCHUYLER, N.Y. --- Each year right around Halloween time, a group of radio enthusiasts man the bridges running over the thruway to prevent one person with bad intentions from committing a horrible act. Its a group of amateur radio enthusiasts
David Strong has been apart of the Pumpkin Patrol for 4 years. He said back in 1974 a person threw a pumpkin off of a bridge it landed on a car and did quite a bit of damage. From there, Pumpkin Patrol was born. Now every night in the Halloween season, they are law enforcement's extra eyes and ears.
Strong said a normal-sized pumpkin thrown from a bridge that lands on a vehicle has the ability to destroy the engine, shatter the windshield, and seriously injure or kill the person inside.
The group volunteers their time and said they may never come across someone willing to do such a horrible thing, but said all it takes is one time.
"It does get boring at times but all it takes is one. It could be that one time that you save someone's life where that person made it home to their family rather than went to a hospital or even worse," said Strong.
