GERMAN FLATTS, N.Y. – A raccoon found in the town of German Flatts has tested positive for rabies.
According to Herkimer County Public Health, the raccoon was fighting with a cat on an open porch. A nuisance wildlife service was called in, and killed the animal before bringing it to the department for testing.
The raccoon was sent to Wadsworth Labs in Albany on Wednesday, and the positive result came back the following day.
Public health officials remind residents to vaccinate pets, and stay away from animals that may have signs of rabies.
