UTICA, N.Y. -- Registration will soon open for the 6th annual Central New York Memorial Stair Climb.
On Friday, May 1 at 9 a.m. any new or returning first responder climbers can register. Then on Monday, June 1 at 9 a.m., any remaining spots will be open to the public.
The stair climb is set for Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020 at the Utica State Office Building.
Organizers with the CNY Memorial Stair Climb describe the event below.
"The CNY Memorial Stair Climb is a moving tribute to the firefighters, law enforcement and EMS personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
At the Utica State Office Building on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020, a total of 423 people will climb 55 flights of stairs up and 55 flights of stairs down, to commemorate the 110 flights of stairs that were in One World Trade Center. Each climber will receive a tag in honor of the first responder they’re climbing for, which they will place on the memory board when they complete their climb. As always, members of FDNY who served on 9/11 will be in attendance.
Climbers will also have the option to purchase a tag in honor of a local first responder who died in the line of duty to carry with them as they climb. This option was added as a way to honor not only the memory of the first responders who died saving others on Sept. 11, 2001, but also the heroes who died protecting the local community. Climbers may request any local first responder who died in the line of duty.
The CNY Memorial Stair Climb fulfills the promise to “Never Forget” those who sacrificed everything to save others. We climb because they climbed."
