ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Projects designed to restore and protect resources and benefit communities in the Great Lakes watershed are detailed in a progress report released by New York officials.

The Department of Environmental Conservation posted the 2016-2018 Great Lakes Report online . It describes programs such as Lake Ontario flood mapping, sewage system upgrades and projects that help prevent beach closures and restore habitat and wetlands.

A project between DEC and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe relocated freshwater native mussels to protect them during removal of contaminated sediments in the Grasse River.

Nine habitat restoration projects were completed along the Buffalo River and five restoration projects were designed along the Niagara River.

Nearly 23,000 students participated in hands-on activities and lessons to help the next generation improve the health of the Great Lakes.
