Rescue Mission goals

The Rescue Missions of Rome and Utica are going to serve hundreds of people a holiday meal, but they’re also giving people much more than that.

This is the time of the year when you get together with family and share a holiday meal, but for people who have no family, or are going through tough times, this time of the year can be depressing. Executive Director of the Utica Rescue Mission, Jim Haid explains how they help to change that atmosphere.

"What we try and create here on any given day is a family atmosphere. It’s important because so many people have broken relationships with families. They’ve gone down paths that weren’t the best paths for them and they’ve severed relationships, or they just feel quote unquote “unwanted” by their immediate family."

Utica Resident Dustin Lawler tells us how the Rescue Mission has helped him to feel wanted.

"It makes me feel like I’m not the only one going through hard times or being alone during the holidays."

The Rome Rescue Mission is finding people who don’t want to be alone coming out of the woodwork…literally. Rome Resident John Bennett is leaving the woods to be with his extended family at the Rome Rescue Mission.  "I got down. I cut everything and moved to the woods. I moved to the woods out there for about 3 months, and I’ve stayed here for the last week."

Matt Miller is the Executive Director of the Rome Rescue Mission. He sees the what the Mission is doing for people every day.  "We have people that are coming out of the woods, and they have no family. They have no other place to go, and this is a means for them to enjoy the holiday. Enjoy the birth of Christ. The celebration of that, and be with family."

The family of people sharing the same problems are also recovering from the Rescue Missions goal of helping the body, mind, and spirit. John Bennett:  "God teaches to help those in need. Everybody’s in need. At one time or another in their life, whether they admit it or not, everybody’s in need."

Right now the Rome Rescue Mission is in need of donations. They’re operating with a $27,000 deficit due to a lull in donations. Here's what you can do to help the Rome Rescue Mission:
