WESTMORELAND, N.Y. (UPDATED) – Authorities were called to the scene of a fatal crash at the intersection of Route 5 and Route 233 in Westmoreland around 3 p.m. Thursday.
According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, 88-year-old George R. Wiegand, of New Hartford, suffered serious injuries, and was rushed to St. Elizabeth Medical Center, where he later died.
Sheriff Robert Maciol says the man was driving a 2003 Chevy S10 east on Route 5, when he went into the Route 233 intersection, colliding with two separate vehicles --a car driven by 46-year-old Michael H. Houle and a truck driven by 61-year-old Robert H. Britton.
Houle, Britton and Britton's two passengers, were not injured in the crash.
Portions of both roads were closed for more than two hours, and the public was asked to avoid the area. The roads have since reopened.
The forensics and criminal investigation units are still investigating the accident.
